MailGuard vs Spamgourmet: A Modern Tribute to the Original

Spamgourmet invented the concept of 'count-based' disposable email 20 years ago. MailGuard is the spiritual successor for the modern web.

MailGuard vs Spamgourmet: Respecting the OG

If you are a true veteran of the internet, you know Spamgourmet. Launched in 2000, it was the first service to popularize the idea of "Disposable email with a counter." You could create somename.3.user@spamgourmet.com, and it would forward exactly 3 emails before self-destructing.

It was brilliant. It was revolutionary. It is also... showing its age.

MailGuard is the spiritual successor to Spamgourmet. We took that brilliant core idea (logic in the address) and rebuilt it for the modern era.

The Evolution of an Idea

Spamgourmet's core feature was the "Msg Count" limit. MailGuard expands this logic:

  • Spamgourmet: word.count.user@spamgourmet.com
  • MailGuard: word.count@my-domain.com OR word.time@my-domain.com.

We added Time-based expiry (.7d, .2h) and Sender Locking (.sender!), which Spamgourmet never had.

Deep Dive: Where MailGuard Wins

1. Reputation

Spamgourmet's domain (@spamgourmet.com) is blocked basically everywhere. It has been used by spammers for 20 years. If you try to use it for Netflix or Amazon today, it will likely be rejected. MailGuard uses Custom Domains. You aren't sharing a reputation with bad actors. You are using your own clean domain.

2. Modern Security

Spamgourmet was built in an era before advanced phishing, DKIM enforcement, and modern email routing. MailGuard is built on Cloudflare's secure edge. We respect DMARC policies. We use AWS SES for authenticated replies. We are compliant with Gmail and Yahoo's 2024 sender requirements.

3. Smart Scan

Spamgourmet is a ruthless executioner. If you set the count to 3, the 4th email dies. Period. mailGuard is a Smart Firewall. If the 4th email is a Password Reset or an OTP, our Heuristic Analysis detects the urgency and lets it through, even if the "count" is zero. We protect you from locking yourself out.
